5 things we learned from Focus on Water

We spent four months researching, talking to many experts and meeting exciting projects. We wanted to find out how the water crisis came about and how it could be solved. Who is involved, what is wrong, what needs to be done – and we learned a lot along the way.

We need …

... to develop a fresh understanding of the system.
We must learn to understand water in a new way; to comprehend that it is a cycle that we must work with and manage, and that wastewater is also water that opens up entirely new possibilities – if we take advantage of it.

... to work together.
One solution that almost everyone has formulated: we need to think collectively and work together – across countries and sectors, from individuals and small start-ups to large corporations. This also includes a new method of communication, because in order for everyone to join in, you have to get everyone on board.

… to learn: you are what you eat.
Our eating habits and choices – at home, but especially when we eat out – have a huge impact on the climate – both science journalist Mathias Plüss and vegan chef Sophia Hoffmann underline this. Don't believe that there is nothing a single person can do.

... to get the hurdles out of the way.
Legislation that is not reviewed, a lack of regulations or even ones that obstruct climate protection – you hear about this everywhere. The solution: get active, turn to politics, dive into politics. After all, change begins on the inside.

And, finally:

Think big!
There are thousands of NGOs, associations, projects and action coalitions in Switzerland and around the world that are committed to climate protection. They all have their own priorities, but have one thing in common: to do something about climate change in order to protect us all. We can only achieve this by working together. This is why we have to join forces, talk with each other, cooperate, create networks and plan joint actions. “You have to work together to develop the best solutions,” says Louise Carpentier, Managing Director of the pioneering project VaLoo.  This is the only way to amplify your voice and increase your impact.

And what about you guys?

We have realised that it’s not easy to understand a complex issue like water and to find solutions to the water crisis. However, we have also learned, not least through our coaching applications: there are Swiss pioneers who are rising to this challenge.

Finally, a question for you: What did you learn from the Focus on Water? What have you learned – and how are you putting it into practice now?

Let us know and write to us at migros-pionierfonds@mgb.ch. We look forward to your insights and inputs!

And, of course, this story does not end here. We will continue to keep you up to date with important water-related new. In addition, Samira is always open for your questions and tips.
